On 18 October 2006, the ALP was officially launched at a gala dinner hosted at the 4th Annual African Business Leaders Forum in Johannesburg. The gala dinner was attended by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, former Zambian President Dr Kenneth Kuanda, Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and various Pan-African business leaders.
As the flagship project of the NBF, the ALP (in partnership with Wits Business School and the School of Public and Development Management) will commence next year with an intake of 48 Pan-African students. The intensive programme will address key issues facing leaders in Africa by teaching learners visionary leadership, good governance and problem solving in an African context.
The unique features include:
- The content is designed to specifically address African issues
- All modules will be assessed and the participants will be awarded a University Certificate of Competence
- Delegates will be drawn from the private and public sector, as well as the civil society
- Individual development will be addressed through assessment and coaching
- Participants will be drawn from countries across Africa
- International Study tour where delegates will travel to United States, Europe and Africa to interact with institutions such as the United Nations, African Development Bank and the European Union, as well as visiting international commercial organisations
- The first programme will be run at the Wits Business School, in Johannesburg on block release basis over a period of approximately seven months, details as follows:-
- Block 1 & 2 18 - 30 March 2007
- Block 3 21 - 25 May 2007
- Block 4 23 - 27 July 2007
- Block 5 & 6 01 -16 October 2007 (including the International Study Tour)
The second programme is scheduled to commence on 28 October 2007
